For sale: Johnston Press

Johnston Press, the publisher of the i, The Scotsman and the Yorkshire Post, has put up the for sale sign.

The publisher, which owns more than 200 regional titles and had already launched a strategic review of its business, has been struggling with a £220m repayment.

“Since commencing the strategic review of financing options first announced in March 2017, the company has focused on exploring all options available,” the publisher said in a note to shareholders.

“In order to assess all strategic options to maximise value to its stakeholders, the board of Johnston Press announces that it has decided to seek offers for the company.”

Like other publishers with a legacy in print, Johnston has struggled to maintain advertising revenues.

Although there are no formal discussions with a prospective buyer, the boss of Custos Group, Norwegian entrepreneur Christen Ager-Hanssen, has reportedly said he would be interested if the business went into administration.
