Ford To Join MXR Consortium In North East Bid
The MXR consortium has submitted its bid for the North East region digital radio licence, and at the same time announced its newest member, Ford UK.
The car manufacturer will not be the first non-media company to join MXR, after Psion was brought onboard last month (see MXR Consortium Joined By Psion And UBC). MXR’s rivals in the north east region bid, DRG, also have a non-media company in their midst, in the form of retailers the Carphone Warehouse (see Digital Radio Group Announces Final Shareholder Line-Up).
The chairman and managing director of Ford UK, Ian McAllister, explained the thinking behind the move: “As a consumer-focused company, Ford actively pursues affordable technologies it believes can deliver practical benefits to its customers. Digital radio is one such technology that, in the years ahead, could provide Ford customers with greater accessibility to a wealth of entertainment and information whilst in their vehicles.”
As part of the consortium, Ford intends to introduce digital radio equipment into new models from 2004, while also offering the chance for existing customers to upgrade their current in-car equipment to digital radio receivers. Phil Riley, chairman of the MXR consortium, has described Ford’s involvement as “the single biggest positive step for the uptake of digital radio in the UK.”
The full line-up of proposed services in today’s multiplex bid is as follows:
