Free ISPs Boost Home Internet Use

The introduction of subscription-free internet service providers (ISPs) has dramatically increased the number of UK homes that are connected to the internet, according to the latest Internet Access Report from Continental Research.

The report shows that in just 18 months, home internet access has jumped from 5% to 18%, largely due to the success of free access providers like Freeserve (see ‘Fickle’ Net Users Flock To Free ISPs). Continental’s research also shows that 17.2 million people, or 37% of the population, now have Net access in either their home, work or school.

For e-commerce groups, this group of users could prove to be very attractive. The report shows that 40% of connected homes are ABs and the typical user is male, under 55 and also of social class AB. Furthermore, users are now using the Net more frequently than ever before, with 44% of users getting online on a daily basis.
