Freeserve Enters Unmetered Internet Access Arena

The competition to provide true unmetered internet access looks set to heat up again as Freeserve launches its AnyTime scheme, which will offer round-the-clock access for a flat fee of £12.99 per month.

Last year AltaVista was forced to abandon its unmetered access package (see AltaVista Blames BT For Stalling On Free Internet Service) after it was found to be financially untenable, in a situation which led to the resignation of managing director Andy Mitchell (see AltaVista MD Quits Over Free Internet Access Fiasco). The company blamed BT for delays in introducing the FRIACO system which meant AltaVista was taking on the cost of the calls demanded by BT.

FRIACO having now been introduced, AOL has already launched 24/7 access for £14.99 per month (see AOL To Roll Out Unmetered Internet Access In The UK) and BT has its own service in the pipeline (see BT Unveils FRIACO-based Unmetered Access Package). However Freeserve’s chief executive John Pluthero has promised that his company’s efforts will knock the competition “into a cocked hat”, having prepared for the demands on network capacity and customer support that have caused problems for similar services in the past.
