Freeview Website Sees Surge In Traffic
![]()
Freeview is attracting masses of interest from the UK’s online population, according to the latest figures from Hitwise, which show that the platform’s website, www.freeview.co.uk, has experienced a surge in traffic.
The latest data shows that www.freeview.co.uk has jumped 629 places in the Hitwise rankings for November, making it the 240th most popular UK website. High levels of traffic to www.freeview.co.uk came from the BBCi Digital site, with users going on to visit the BBC Four and the BBC Choice websites.
Set-top box manufacturer Pace, which was the first to put a £99 receiver on sale (see Pace Of Digital TV Increases), also features prominently in the downstream traffic from www.freeview.co.uk, indicating strong interest in set-top receivers.
According to Hitwise, interest in the Freeview digital television services has driven up the share of traffic going to the ‘Entertainment-Television’ category, with the latest figures showing a relative increase of 20% over the past three months.
The data corroborates recent the BBC’s recent announcement that the launch of the new digital terrestrial platform has been a success, with around 400,000 calls made to the Freeview information line and 600,000 unique users visiting the website in the month since its launch (see Freeview Boosts Prospect Of Analogue Switch Off).
New research from BMRB shows that Freeview could face an uphill struggle over the next year as it competes for audience share with Sky and cable digital services. The figures show that just 9% of those without digital TV said they would be very interested in buying a £99 set-top box to receive Freeview next year (see Only One In Ten Very Interested In Freeview).
