FT.com To Charge For Access From Next Month
![]()
FT.com, the online presence of the Financial Times, is to begin charging subscriptions for access to certain services from next month.
The move concurs with recent research by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) which suggested that in 5 years time most newspapers would charge for access to their online versions (see Web Newspapers To Charge Within Five Years). The Times website announced charges for access to certain areas last year (see Times Online To Charge Users).
Under the new system, which is designed to improve the speed and simplicity of accessing the site, users will be able to read all the latest news and most comment and analysis. However, a fee will be asked for access to articles which are more than 7 days old, pages devoted to specific industries and various opinion pieces.
The site is to offer access to its subscription areas for £75 a year, while additional research tools will be available for an extra fee.
