Future Plans For Murdoch

In an interview with the Financial Times at the weekend, Rupert Murdoch revealed future plans for his media empire in the UK;

Television – In the interview Murdoch revealed he is considering buying his own TV satellite, to enable him to launch a range of channels over Europe. He believes this to be an economical alternative to the high cost of leasing transponders. However, if he decides to go down this path it will take two years to put into action.

Murdoch has decided not too make a bid for the world television rights to the 2000 Olympic Games, as he feels it would be too complicated. He is, however, interested in using some of his planned digital channels for specialised coverage.

Publishing Murdoch revealed a programme of investment for Today, ending speculation that he may have been about to close or sell the newspaper. The investment will start with a multi-million pound promotional campaign aimed at raising Today’s profile and circulation.

On the subject of the price war he said; “The price of The Sun and Today will rise shortly but will still stay way below their competitors.” The Times will remain at 20p at least until the autumn, when it may be increased to 25p.

Within the next two years Murdoch plans to put all his newspapers on-line. He is considering whether consumers should pay a monthly subscription for on-line newspapers or pay a charge (equivalent to the cover price) every time they log on to a newspaper.
