Future Publishing Gives Music Fans More Metal
![]()
Future Publishing is launching a regular special edition of its Metal Hammer music magazine aimed at the younger and more mainstream section of the nu-metal market.
Each edition of the monthly Metal Hammer: Special Editions is dedicated to a different band and comprises of an A1 poster and an eight page interview of that month’s chosen act. The spin-off title, which is produced by the existing Metal Hammer team, will also feature regular covermounts to attract younger readers.
Commenting on the launch, the magazine’s publisher, Jackie Garford, said: “With such a strong focus on mainstream band coverage, the Metal Hammer: Special Editions are an ideal entry point for younger music magazine readers.”
With the exception of a slight dip in the last half of 1999 and the first six months of 2000, the original Metal Hammer magazine has seen circulation increase steadily since its launch in 1994 (see below). According to ABC results for the six months ending in December 2001, the magazine, which caters for serious heavy metal fans with an average age of 21, saw circulation increase by 8.1% year on year to 40,060.
Last month, Future Publishing’s Official PlayStation 2 Magazine signed a deal with Sony to provide branded content including breaking news, previews, reviews and tips for its Playstation website (see Official PlayStation 2 Magazine Goes Interactive With Sony).
