Future Publishing Launches Gaming Spin-Off Magazine

Future Publishing is extending its Edge magazine brand with the launch of a one-off special designed to capitalise on the growing popularity of computer games consoles.
The Retro special will consist of 148 pages containing anecdotes and self-contained overviews of the creation of what Future claims is “the most seminal video games in existence”.
Retro is targeted at anyone who grew up with computer gaming, or missed out of classic games the first time around. It is aimed at the more creative reader and will share a similar layout and style to the original Edge magazine.
Publisher, James Binns, commented: “Retro offers appeal to both gamers and creative types alike. Edge is the most respected magazine in the games industry and this special succeeds in combining its gaming intelligence and coffee table aesthetics to provide an anecdotal and visual showcase of many classic games.”
Edge magazine has seen its circulation fluctuate over the past five years, largely due to the fickle nature of the games magazine market. However, ABC figures for the January to June 2002 period show that the Edge‘s circulation rose by 19.7% year on year to 31,063, up from 25,948 in the same period the previous year.
Late last year Future Publishing rebranded its computer titles under the name Future Digital and launched a new monthly title called Digital Camera Magazine (see Future Rebrands Computer Titles And Details New Launch).
