Future Publishing has redesigned its two flagship PlayStation 2 magazines in an attempt to target the influx of consumers likely to receive the games console as a gift this Christmas.
As part of the initiative, Official PlayStation 2 Magazine has been completely redesigned, with a new 18-page Replay section featuring game challenges, competitions and reader leagues based around the latest games.
Playable demos and exclusive reviews will remain at the heart of the title, but new look will include expanded coverage of network gaming, a completely revamped previews section and increased reader interaction.
PlayStation 2 Magazine‘s redesigned issue goes on sale 28 December with a cover price of £5.49. The issue’s covermounted disc features nine playable demos, a 226-page tips book and a range of competitions.
Future Games group publisher, Mia Roberts, said: “This redesign ensures Official PlayStation 2 Magazine is fun and accessible to this winter’s new breed of console owners while remaining exciting for readers who have been with the title since issue one.”
PSM2 has also been given a new look to increase its appeal amongst its audience of hard core games fans aged between 19 and 28. The revamped title includes a new logo and an overhauled previews section, Hands-On, which guarantees to have played every game it features.
The magazine’s reviews section has also been redesigned to include double the amount of screen shots and the Accelerator news section features a range of new regulars that look forward to the arrival of Sony’s forthcoming PSX and PSP consoles.
The new 132-page PSM2 has also seen a number of editorial changes with the promotion of Dan Dawkins from news editor to deputy editor, with the appointment of a range of new staff members due to be announced in the new year.
Roberts added: “PSM2 is written by gamers for gamers and the redesign reflects that – detailed design, passionate editorial, hard-hitting opinion and always being first on the very best PlayStation 2 has to offer. If you love PS2 games, this is the independent magazine you have to read.”
PSM2‘s redesigned issue goes on sale tomorrow with a coverprice of £3.99. The title comes with a cover-mounted video DVD, as well as a free 100-page tips book featuring ten full games walkthroughs.
Earlier this month Future Publishing confirmed that it is folding its recently launched monthly music title, Bang. The January issue of the magazine will be the last ever edition of the title, which aimed to create a niche for itself in the competitive music market (see Future Publishing’s Music Title Makes Final Bang).
