Game On With NTL’s Interactive Services

The cable company NTL has announced that it is to carry an interactive games channel on its cable digital TV service, which is due for launch in the spring. The channel is the first of its kind in Britain and involves the cable operator teaming up with interactive software publisher Infogrames Entertainment.

NTL digital cable subscribers will be able to access a range of games online, and to play tournaments, including shoot ’em up and sport style games, with people in the same house, the same town or hundreds of miles away. The Games Channel will also provide chat forums, bulletin boards and special events.

John Hondros, director of content NTL Interactive, commented: “What we are witnessing is the creation of an exciting new concept in interactive gaming through the capabilities of digital TV. Clearly, digital cable TV is the perfect platform for this time of interactivity as it offers fast, two-way communication over NTL’s fibre network.”

The Games Channel will initially only be available to digital cable television subscribers, and will form part of the range of interactive services being provided by NTL. Other services will include shopping and home banking (see Newsline).
