GEITF 2002 Events Programme Announced

The events programme for the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival 2002 (GEITF) has been announced with a range of industry figures including Stuart Prebble, David Liddiment, Richard Eyre and Kevin Lygo now confirmed to appear alongside keynote speakers, Mark Thompson (see Bertelsmann Chief To Present Worldview At GEITF) and Thomas Middelhoff (see Bertelsmann Chief To Present Worldview At GEITF).
This year’s events will include a discussion on the future of ITV, with a panel comprising former ITV chief executive, Stuart Prebble; acting ITV chief executive, Mick Desmond and chairman of RDF Media, Richard Eyre, talking for the first time about the collapse of ITV Digital and the future challenges faced by the ITV Network.
The Festival will also feature a series of interviews with controllers of the UK’s main terrestrial and satellite channels. ITV’s director of channels, David Liddiment; Channel 5’s director of programmes, Kevin Lygo and BSkyB’s deputy director of broadcasting, Katy Thorogood, will speak alongside BBC1’s controller, Lorraine Heggessey and BBC2’s controller, Jane Root.
American talk show host, Jerry Springer, will host a session on the rise in advertiser funded programming, with Granada’s sponsorship and marketing director, Martin Lowde and the ITC’s director of programming and advertising policy, Martin Hart, discussing the narrowing gap between programme makers and advertisers.
The revenue earning potential of interactive TV will be up for discussion and BSkyB’s head of enhanced television, Emma Sommerville, will discuss the intricacies of the medium with the BBC’s head of interactive television, Scott Gronmark and creative director of Publicis Networks, Jon Williams.
There will also be sessions on British drama, new media and TV’s relationship with the Royals. This year’s Alternative MacTaggart Lecture will be given by Fox News’ war correspondent, Gerlado Rivera, who will give his insight into the future of news and current affairs programming.
This year’s GEITF will take place from 23 to 25 August. Coverage of the events will appear on NewsLine during the following week.
