Germans Lead In European Media
Bertelsmann is still Europe’s top media company, according to CIT Publications Media Map Monitor. 1994/5 turnover is up 9% at over DM20 billion, and profits are up 7% at DM1.6 billion. The top-ranking German company’s lead over its public broadcasting compatriate ARD has increased from $2.4 billion to $3.9 billion.
In third place is Havas, from France, then Silvio Berlusconi’s Fininvest. The highest ranking British company is Anglo-Dutch Reed Elsevier in fifth place. The main movers are Luxembourg based CLT and German magazine publishers Axel Springer. Both have re-entered the top table of leading European media companies, and both are increasing their investments in new multimedia applications, according to CIT. Exchange rate fluctuations have depressed the figures of UK-based partners BBC and Pearson, who have slipped down a few places. Media Map Monitor compares like-for-like turnover and profits for Europe’s top 100 media companies.
