Germany’s historical crucifixion of Brazil in the World Cup semi-finals on Tuesday has become the most-discussed single sports game ever on Twitter.
A 7-1 win for Germany on Brazil’s home turf managed to generate a total of 35.6 million tweets mentioning either #GER or #BRA, according to Twitter – almost 11 million more than the previous record set by the Super Bowl earlier this year (24.9 million).
The German team also managed to set a new record for most tweets per minute, with Sami Khedira’s goal in the 29th minute, which took the score to 5-0, generating 580,166 tweets – almost 97,000 tweets every 10 seconds.
Miroslav Klose – Germany’s most tweeted about player during the match – became the all-time greatest goal scorer in a World Cup final, while a goal after just 11 minutes took 24 year old Thomas Muller’s total World Cup goals to 10.
Geo-tagged tweets show a hive of activity across the globe, with tweets largely centred around Brazil for the first half. Twitter activity for the German side happened in bursts, mostly around the time that each goal was scored, before evening out with Brazil as the match came to a close.
