GfK Survey Names Heart As Most Listened To London Station

Heart 106.2 has been named the most listened to radio station in London by the controversial GfK Broadcast Media Survey.

The results of the new audience measurement system, developed by Kelvin MacKenzie’s Wireless Group, show that listeners in the London area tune in to the Chrysalis-owned station for longer than they do 95.8 Capital FM.

Data for the six months to 14 September reveals that Heart 106.2 has a total of 7.7 million listening hours per week, compared with 95.8 Capital FM’s 7.4 million, giving it a slightly larger share of the commercial radio market in London.

However, GfK’s latest research for the London area also shows that 95.8 Capital FM retains its lead in terms of weekly reach with 2.63 million adult listeners, almost 200,000 more than Heart 106.2 FM with 2.42 million.

This is the first time that GfK has released total listening hours as part of the Broadcast Media Survey. It is understood that on this occasion the research group felt it would offer a clearer picture of the London market.

On a national level the unofficial GfK figures for the three months to September revealed a bounce back for BBC Five Live, whilst talkSPORT stabilised with the return of the football season and held on to its lead as the UK’s leading commercial station with 6.2 million listeners.

Classic FM maintained its position as the second most popular national commercial station with 5.75 million listeners, ahead of Virgin AM and FM with a weekly reach 4.11 million.

Earlier this week RAJAR announced plans to invest a further £500,000 during 2004 in testing the latest electronic audience meters following its decision to stick to the current diary system of measurement.

The second stage of tests into the latest electronic audiometers developed by Arbitron and Radiocontrol will begin in July next year, as soon as the new generation technology is available for trial (see RAJAR To Invest In Further Electronic Measurement Trials).
