Ginger Media Submits An Offer For The Daily Star
Chris Evans’ Ginger Media has approached Express Newspapers with a bid for its tabloid title, The Daily Star. Evans is understood to have offered Lord Hollick, chief executive of United News & Media (UNM), a straight swap of a 16% share in the Ginger Media Group for The Daily Star. UNM is the parent company of Express Newspapers.
The Daily Star’s circulation in January this year was 537,536 – a year on year fall of 8.3% – and it announced 46 job losses towards the end of 1998 following the departure of its editor, Phil Walker (see Newsline).
Despite the approach to Express Newspapers, nothing has materialised as yet and talks are understood to have stalled over price and other issues. Express Newspapers also owns The Express and The Sunday Express, and there are fears that the cost of running the press for the company’s two remaining national titles alone would be too high.
Ginger Media has also won a contract to produce a party political broadcast for the Labour Party, with an aim to liven up the Party’s 100th anniversary, and to capture young members.
