Glamour To Release ABC Figure
![]()
It has been confirmed that Glamour, Condé Nast’s new women’s lifestyle monthly, will be among those titles included in the Audit Bureau of Circulation’s (ABC) release for consumer magazines next week.
There had been speculation that the publisher would satisfy itself with issuing its own statement of circulation. This is believed to have resulted from an interpretation of an ABC rule stating that once a magazine has been audited on a quarterly basis, it must continue to submit to this auditing period for the following two.
In fact, while Glamour’s audit will only take in four months, as this is how long the magazine has been in existence, it will be counted by the ABC as a six month audit and will continue to be audited under this period.
The title got off to a flying start when demand outstripped supply on its first issue and extra copies had to be printed (see Handbag-Sized Glamour Proves Big Success). Rumour has it that Condé Nast’s original 200,000 a month circulation could be doubled when the figures are revealed next week.
When questioned on the subject at the Total Publishing Show last month, launch editor Jo Elvin had been primed to reserve comment, but stated that the title had been a “huge and immediate success.” and implied it had exceeded expectations (see Women On Top: The Glossies Fight Back).
Time Life International’s InStyle also launched during the six month period (see First Issue Review: InStyle), but despite appearing a month or so before Glamour, it will not be included in this set of ABC results. Like Glamour it was an import of a successful US formula, but is not thought to have made the trip across the Atlantic with the same success.
All ABC consumer magazine figures will be available to subscribers in the MediaTel Press database on their release next Thursday at 5pm. Friday’s NewsLine will carry analysis of the market and major sectors.
