GMTV Given Reprieve By ITC
The Independent Television Commission has announced that, following a review of GMTV’s performance this year, it will not be imposing any threatened sanctions.
Earlier in the year, as part of its annual review of the performance of Channel 3 licensees, the ITC issued a formal warning to GMTV that if there was no improvement, specifically in the quality of its current affairs and children’s programming, sanctions would be imposed.
The ITC has decided that there has been “demonstrable improvement”. The introduction of the Reuters News Hour has strengthened GMTV’s news and current affairs; children’s information programming has improved, but not sufficiently to completely satisfy the ITC. “Despite these improvements, the Commissionwill be looking for further evidence of sustained quality in GMTV’s children’s programmes during the remainder of the year.”
