GMTV To Appeal To ITC

GMTV plans to ask the Independent Television Commission to change the conditions surrounding the licence it was awarded two years ago.

Peter McHugh, director of programmes, said yesterday that he wants to be able to broadcast less material for children and devote more time to tabloid-style news and features.

Under ITC rules GMTV has to provide 4 hours and 18 minutes of children’s programming a week. The popularity of The Big Breakfast means this does not now make commercial sense. GMTV lost £10m in the first six months of this year.
