Go Racing Deal Could Be Halted By Pre-Race Data Problem
![]()
The deal to create digital horseracing and betting channel, Go Racing, could be in jeopardy as the British Horseracing Board (BHB) has so far failed to fulfil a major condition of the arrangement in a move the Go Racing CEO has described as “plainly ludicrous.”
Having reached an agreement with the majority of British racecourses (see Go Racing Gets Go Ahead For Racing Channel), the Go Racing consortium, consisting of BSkyB, Channel 4 and Arena Leisure, now requires the fulfilment of the condition- the supply of pre-race data by the BHB- in order for Arena Leisure to release the funds it has raised for the project.
Christopher Stoddart, CEO of Go Racing, explained: “The BHB has spoken to Go Racing direct, but has refused to supply a firm price [for the supply of data]. They have merely said that they will not ask more for data than the total value of the deal which we have negotiated with the racecourses for all rights. This is plainly ludicrous, as it sets the potential price far too high, and creates maximum uncertainty for Go Racing.”
The BHB has also said that some data rights, in relation to new technology markets will not be available to the channel. The problem could mean the end for Channel 4’s long-nurtured plans for a horse racing channel. Arena was meant to hold an EGM on 18 June regarding the release of funds, due to occur on 1 July, and therefore requires a prompt conclusion.
“I am driven to question whether the BHB is interested in building the sport through enterprise, or whether they are merely intent on bolstering their own position.” concluded Stoddart. “It is sad that yet another deal is likely to founder on the rocks of a divided industry.”
