Good Growth Predicted For Cable/Satellite

Good Growth Predicted For Cable/Satellite

Non-terrestrial television households are set to grow by 1.1 million to 6.8 million by the end of 1997, according to a new survey from Mintel. By the end of 1996 dish sales/rentals had reached 3.8 million and looks set to exceed 4 million by the end of this year. However, cable connections last year exceeded DTH installations by 30%.

The survey also points out the rate of consolidation on the cable industry: in 1994 there were 21 multiple cable operators and by the end of last year there were only 13. Meanwhile, the number of non-terrestrial channels has grown from 45 in 1994 to 94 this year.

Mintel goes on to say that the industry must rely on subscription charges for the bulk of its revenue: BSkyB advertising accounts for only 11% of the total turnover, whereas subscription charges make up 84% of turnover.
