Google Named Website Of The Year 2002

Internet search engine Google has been named website of the year 2002 in a poll conducted by Nielsen//NetRatings.
The poll, which is based on the internet research company’s measurement of audience growth, shows that Google.com/Google.co.uk was visited by 4.7 million at-home internet users during 2002. Its audience share increased from 18% to 28% over the course of the year and its toolbar, news and shopping sites have won the admiration of analysts.
Windowsmedia.com was voted broadband site of 2002 on the strength of its streamed and downloaded content and consumer opinion site, DooYoo.co.uk, took the newcomer of the year accolade, with a 3.5% increase in audience share.
MSN.com was the most visited website of the year, with over 7 million visits in the last twelve months (see below). Just behind was Passport.com, with more than 4.5 million visits and Yahoo.com with 4.1 million.
European internet analyst, Tom Ewing, said: “2002 was an exciting year for the internet in the UK. We started to see a number of well-known sites reaching break-even or profitability this year, as the market reaches maturity. We now have an environment where the best-known brands are well established and trusted.”
He added: “Not all the sites we’ve singled out appear in our top domains lists each month but they’ve been 2002’s best performers and show the resilience and creativity of the online sector.”
Initiative Media forecasts that 2003 will be a strong year for the online industry, with internet adspend tipped to increase by 48% over the next year (see UK Advertising Forecasts From Initiative Media).
