Google rolls out ‘reject all’ cookie option in Europe after fines

Google has updated its cookie consent pop-ups in France to include a “reject all” option, with plans to expand to all of Europe this month.

The redesigned popup (pictured- below) makes it as easy for consumers to reject all cookie tracking as it is to accept or customise preferences.

The new options will now appear on YouTube and Google Search in France.

This follows France’s data watchdog, the Commission nationale de l’informatique et des libertés (CNIL), fining the tech giant €150m earlier this year for failing to comply with French regulations when presenting cookie tracking choices to users.

The old framework only included options “I agree” or “Customize”, which the French watchdog argued made it harder for consumers to reject cookie tracking than accept.

In a statement on its French news blog, Google said the plan is for this reengineered framework to also be rolled out across all Google services in Europe so it will pop up when a user is not logged in or using an incognito window.
