Government Affirms Tobacco Advertising Ban
Minister of Public Health, Tessa Jowell, told seventeen editors of top magazines that the government is to continue its commitment to a complete ban on tobacco advertising. At the meeting held by the PPA the two groups also agreed on proposals for magazines to work closely with the government to aid the anti-smoking campaign. Jowell also agreed to review the effects of the proposed advertising ban with PPA business publishers, prior to the publication of the Government’s anti-smoking White Paper which is scheduled for 1998.
PPA deputy chief, Peter Dear, said: “We are, of course, concerned about the potential effects on business-to-business advertising, but welcome the opportunity she has provided us with to present our case on this issue.”
