Government Rethinks TV Take-Overs

National Heritage Secretary, Peter Brooke is to host talks with the ITC and Channel 3 companies over government policy on TV company take-overs by foreign and domestic predators.

The talks have been prompted by all-party demands for an extension of the take-over moratorium which runs out at the end of the year.

Rebels want the take-over ban retained until at least 1996 when the BBC charter is also renewed and all parties are promising to back a quick one line bill. An extension would allow more time for examining long-term support for smaller firms and to assess the effect of growth in the cable and satellite industry.
