Granada Accused Of Breaching Contract

Granada Television has been accused by the Shadow Heritage Secretary, Ann Clwyd, of concentrating more on making profits than its initial task of programme making. She has called on the Independent Television Commission to withdraw the company’s licence due to an excessive breach of contract.

Programming promises in Granada’s franchise application have been broken, according to Clwyd, with the company reassuring that it would produce 14 films and three drama-documentaries a year, as well as the promise of a news operation and investment in regional programming. None of these ventures have been adhered to, according to the Labour spokeswoman. She is also concerned about the “job slaughter” that is prevalant within the company, with 370 redundancies since the franchise renewal (Newsline 23/10).

The ITC has not commented on Clywd’s allegations as it is considering the points made in the dossier.
