The Independent Television Commission yesterday announced that Granada Television had to pay a £500,000 fine because of Richard and Judy’s This Morning. This is the first time since the 1990 Broadcasting Act that the ITC has levied such a penalty. The programme breached the ITC’s Programme and Sponsorship Codes on eight different occasions; Granada received a formal warning on 21 November, and has since submitted further information to the ITC. However, breaches in the Code are seen as “extremely serious”, and the effect of ignoring the rules “seriously damages the editorial integrity of programmes.”
One of the breaches included a competition on the show which was sponsored by She and Safeway.
