Granada’s Breeze Blows Cold

Granada is “phasing out” its digital TV channel Granada Breeze after it failed to attract enough viewers.

The channel, which has a women’s magazine-style format, was launched in 1996 as a spin-off from The Goodlife Channel and, according to a spokesman for Granada, has performed poorly from the outset. The channel will be removed from the BSkyB and ITV Digital platforms on 31 January and will continue to be shown on Telewest and NTL “for the near future.”

A spokesman for the channel said: “Granada Breeze’s performance was never strong and it has struggled in an increasingly competitive market.”

Granada insists that no job losses will result from the closure and plans to concentrate on its flagship digital channel, Granada Plus and its Men and Motors channel, which will broadcast for an extra four hours each day.

Last November Granada announced the closure of its Wellbeing TV channel as part of a cost cutting drive brought on by the downturn in the advertising market (see Granada To Close WellBeing TV Channel).
