Greig appointed Evening Standard editor

Evening Standard Logo Tatler editor Geordie Greig has been appointed editor of London’s Evening Standard.

Greig replaces Veronica Wadley, who has been at the paper since 2002. In a statement, the Standard said that she is leaving “pursue new interests in journalism”.

Greig, 48, has been editor of society magazine Tatler since 1999. He has also worked for the Daily Mail and The Sunday Times.

The paper will be edited by Andrew Burdiss, currently deputy editor, until Greig starts in February.

Greig’s appointment follows the sale by Daily Mail & General Trust (DMGT) of a majority stake of 74.9% in the Evening Standard to Russian oligarch Alexander Lebedev (see Lebedev buys Evening Standard).

Wadley said: “I am very proud to have edited this great London newspaper and, with the huge support of the staff, to have built it up into a prize-winning newspaper.

“The Evening Standard is an important London institution held in equal measures of respect and affection. I sincerely hope it will have a secure future.

“I have had 12 very happy years at Associated and leave with the greatest affection for everyone, particularly the Standard’s staff who have shown such selfless commitment over the years.”

The latest ABC figures, for December 2008, show that the paper had a total circulation of 287,173.
