Growth In Satellite Ownership Maintained
The number of satellite dishes in Great Britain grew by 52,000 in November to 2,861,000 according to the latest GFK Satellite Monitor. Dish ownership grew steadily during the three months from September to November 1994, and for the first time in 1994 growth outstripped the figures for 1993.
November’s net growth of 52,000 compares to 46,000 in October and 47,000 in September. BSkyB offered a 30-day free trial in October, but November’s figure takes into account the dishes returned by customers who discounted their subscriptions at the end of the free offer.
“The satellite equipment market is seasonal, and ownership figures always grow quickly in the run up to Christmas” said John Binks of GfK, “Our research suggests that BSkyB’s offer maintained dish sales during October, but we did not see any significant boost compared with the months on either side.”
Total growth during the three month period September to November was 145,000, compared to 84,000 during the same period in 1993. This is the first time that growth in has been ahead of growth during 1993; from January to August 1994 growth was 10% down on 1993.
