Guardian And Observer Attempt To Woo Indy Readers

The Guardian and Observer newspapers have sent a letter to Independent readers which offers free and discounted copies of their newspapers for a limited period.

Despite joining with the Independent in criticising Rupert Murdoch’s cut-price Times, the Guardian newspapers have infuriated Rosie Boycott, editor in chief of both Independent titles, with the offer.

She has written a letter to both Alan Rusbridger and Will Hutton, editors of the Guardian and Observer respectively, which says she is “appalled” at the move, which she states has “only one intention in mind – to try to put us out of business.”

The Guardian, on the other hand, is said to now see the Independent titles as fair game after the recent sacking of Andrew Marr by the Mirror Group. This development, according to the Guardian, “effectively signals the end of the Independent as it was originally conceived by its founding editor.”

The vouchers sent out by the newspapers offers both the Guardian and Observer free for one week and then at a discounted price for another two weeks.
