Guardian Celebrates First Year Online

The Guardian is to celebrate its first year on the internet with a week of themed editorial in its newspaper and on the Guardian Unlimited website. From 15-22 January the future of the Net will be explored in a week of dedicated features and supplements.
The Guardian will run exclusive extracts from “The New, New Thing”, a book about Jim Clark, one of the world’s most important internet entrepreneurs, and described as “the guy who created Netscape and triggered the internet boom.” An editorial throughout the week will look at the way the net is changing our lives and on Saturday January 22 a 16 -page supplement in the Guide called Life Online will contain a directory of the best sites covering a wide range of subjects. The directory will be expanded on the Guardian Unlimited website.
The Guardian launched its network of Unlimited sites in January 1998 (see Guardian Launches ‘Unlimited’ Website Network). Since then it has continually added to the network, which now has a total of nine sites, the latest addition an e-commerce directory, Shopping Unlimited (see Guardian Adds Shopping Unlimited To Websites Network). The first official ABC//electronic audit for the network for June 1999 showed the sites receiving over 9 million page impressions.
The week’s themed celebrations will be supported with a national TV, radio and banner campaign from 13 January and Life Online will be launched with in-paper ads from 8 January.
