Guardian Group Joins Bidding War For RIM
The Guardian Media Group has asked the secretary of state for trade and industry for consent to make a bid for Regional Independent Media, the UK’s sixth largest regional publisher. It is the third regional newspaper group to make a formal application, clearance having also been recently sought by Gannett and Johnston Press (see Johnston Press Joins Race For RIM).
GMG is the seventh largest regional publisher in the UK with titles including the Manchester Evening News and the Guildford Times. As consolidation within the regional newspaper industry intensifies, RIM is one of the last independent groups in the UK and its prized Yorkshire Post makes it a valuable asset.
Earlier this week the previous two bid proposals for the group were referred to the Competition Commission, in accordance with current regulations (see RIM Bids Referred To Competition Commission).
