Guardian Launches New Magazine For Senior Managers

The Guardian is building on the success of its Society supplement with the launch of a new stand-alone monthly magazine, called Public, targeting senior public service managers.

Public will launch later this year with a controlled circulation of 200,000. It will be aimed at key decision makers and will address a number of core editorial areas including management, policy, finance and technology.

The A4-sized title will contain a mix of in-depth features and career support advice, as well as conference reviews and detailed case studies of work in the field. It will also aim to provide a forum for debating the common themes faced by managers across the entire range of public services.

Simon Waldman, the Guardian‘s director of digital and specialist publishing, said: “Public will combine the style, intelligence and authority of a national newspaper with the depth of understanding you expect from a specialist title. For the first time senior managers right across the spectrum of public services will have one magazine, which they can call their own.”

The magazine’s commercial team will be led by Benjamin Wegg-Prosser as publisher. Gavin Andrews will manage display advertising and sponsorship with support from public services business development manager, Mark Lacey. Guardian Recruitment Solutions will sell recruitment advertising in the magazine.

The first edition of Public will appear on news-stands on 3 June and will be published ten times a year. It will be edited by David Walker and will also be available on subscription through the Guardian and Guardian Unlimited.

The latest ABC results for the six months to March 2004 show that the Guardian has been hard hit by the success of compact launches from the Independent and the Times. The paper saw circulation decline by 6.3% year on year to 380,422. However, Guardian editor, Alan Rusbridger, recently hinted that he could be considering launching a midsize edition somewhere between a compact and a broadsheet in an attempt to reverse declining sales (see ABC National Newspaper Round-Up – March 2004).
