Guardian Media Group Plans Yorkshire Radio Bid

Guardian Media Group confirmed today that it is lining up a bid for a regional radio station in the Yorkshire region. Under the Variety FM banner it will broadcast a mixture of music and speech.

The station will begin a test broadcast in Selby on 1 February, to be ready when the licence is advertised in the middle of this year. The successful applicant will begin broadcasting in 2001.

The bid will add to the group’s radio portfolio, which has been expanding in recent months. It is one of seven bidders for the Independent Local Radio Licence for South Wales, which is due to be announced this spring (see Seven Applicants Bid For South Wales Licence). Another Variety station is also being planned for the West Midlands region.

John Myers, managing director of the group’s radio division, confirmed plans today for the Yorkshire station but said that research was still in the early stages. He said the group intends to set up a steering committee from local businesses to guide research within the area.
