The latest ABC results show the Guardian‘s new Berliner format increasing sales during its first month of publication, with the paper adding 7.4% to its circulation year on year in September.
The title, which now commands a circulation of 404,187, put its rivals to shame last month, with the new reduced-size format scoring a circulation increase well in excess of any other national daily.
The Times also saw its sales rise during September, adding an impressive 5.8% year on year to total 699,425.
However, the circulation increases experienced within the quality sector did not translate to other markets, with both the mid market and popular seeing a dip in sales across the board.
The Daily Express saw the largest circulation decline during September, shedding 13.4% of its circulation year on year and slipping further away from the 1 million mark at 831,373.
The Sunday newspaper market looked similarly depressed, with declines for every national newspaper, except the Mail on Sunday and Sunday Times, which saw minor increases of 0.3% and 0.5% respectively year on year.
Earlier this month saw the Independent on Sunday announce its intention to follow the weekday Independent and publish in tabloid-only format. The move ended months of speculation and is intended to ape the success of the paper’s weekday counterpart in boosting sales (see Independent On Sunday To Make Tabloid Switch).
A full breakdown of the latest ABC figures will be available on NewsLine this afternoon, with detailed analysis for both weekday and weekend titles by market sector.
