Guardian To Launch Manchester Morning Paper

The Guardian Media Group has confirmed that it plans to launch a new morning newspaper in Manchester. Although still in its initial stages it is believed to be based on local models such as Trinity’s Daily Post & Echo in Liverpool which publishes a morning sister paper for its evening title.

The group, which publishes the Manchester Evening News as well as the Guardian and the Observer, made a statement today about the planned launch. “As a major European city we believe it is time that Manchester is able to boast an exciting morning paper. Research has shown strongly that a new publication from the same stable as the Manchester Evening News would be welcomed and trusted. Our long established pedigree, resources and commitment to Greater Manchester puts us in a dominant position to provide 24 hour a day coverage of local news, sport and business.”

Speculation in the national press that the publication would be more upmarket than its sister title and further launch details would not be confirmed by the Guardian Media Group.
