GWR And Classic Instigate Digital Listener Trials
GWR Group and Classic FM are stepping-up research and development into digital audio broadcasting. The commercial multiplex operators are extending the current London pilot and will be beginning commercial radio’s first listener trials.
GWR and Classic FM are working with supply partner BT, to create a multiplex input point at the BT Tower in central London. This programme will help assess the cost of distribution networks and their reliability.
A number of specially built receivers have been commissioned to equip a listener trial designed to gain more understanding of DAB reception and test opinion.
Completion of the distribution network is scheduled for early March. Classic FM will then be able to test a range of data applications and developments and take audio and data feeds from other broadcasters who may want to participate.
The existing GWR/Classic FM London digital experiment has been running since September last year. The service simulcasts Classic FM, Classic Select Jazz, LBC, London News Direct, World Radio Networks, BBC GLR, GWR’s Classic Gold Network and London’s Heart 106.2.
Digital radio has many benefits; it will broaden the radio spectrum, making it possible for many more radio stations on the air waves, and the quality of digital audio is far superior to traditional analogue broadcasts.
