GWR And Ginger Create Digital Consortium

Chris Evans’ media group Ginger Media has teamed up with GWR Group to create Digital One, a digital consortium which will bid for the only national commercial digital radio licence advertised by the Radio Authority today (see earlier Radio Authority Advertises National Digital Licence story).

Quentin Howard, head of GWR’s Digital Division, will become Digital One’s chief executive-designate. GWR Group chief executive, Ralph Bernard will be chairman and David Campbell, Ginger chief executive, becomes vice chairman.

Howard promises that, if successful in its bid, Digital One will provide at least four new national digital-only radio stations. The group’s application will state that it will begin broadcasting in 1999.

Campbell is keen to get digital radio up and running but calls for backing. He says: “Digital radio in the UK needs to gain momentum and this means a bigger committment from the Government, the Radio Authority, the commercial radio sector and particularly the receiver manufacturers.”

GWR’s Classic FM and Ginger’s Virgin Radio are both guaranteed frequencies on national commercial multiplex; Digital One is bidding to provide stations on the remaining frequencies on the multiplex.
