GWR Finds A Model For Radio Ownership
Following reports last week of GWR’s concerns about radio ownership rules (see Newsline), the radio group has called for current rules governing commercial radio ownership to be replaced by those similar to the ones governing television.
GWR’s model calls for a 20% maximum audience share for radio, which is 5% more than the limit on television. The report argues that a review of the rules is needed because current regulations hinder the achievement of key objectives set out for radio by the Government in its consultation paper (see Newsline).
Chief executive of GWR, Ralph Bernard, stated: “Current rules restricting radio ownership were devised before the creation of a robust audience measurement system for radio. Share of audience measures best reflect plurality and such measures are now readily available for radio which is why we are putting forward the case for change.”
