GWR Group Welcomes Currie Appointment

Radio owner GWR Group has welcomed the appointment of Lord Currie as chairman of Ofcom. The appointment was announced yesterday and was expected to be welcomed by the industry, despite concerns of cronyism put forward by members of the Opposition (see Lord Currie To Chair New Communications Regulator).
Ralph Bernard, executive chairman of GWR, said: “As an economist who understands the market and with his reputation for being a skilled manager Lord Currie would appear to be the ideal candidate to take on what is a hugely important job for the future of broadcasting in the UK.”
He continued: “He will be able to bring a fresh eye to many of the issues and it will be important that he recognises that the communications ecology very much includes radio. We would urge him to ensure that Radio is regulated alongside the other communications industry in a truly integrated Ofcom.”
