GWR Joins Race To Replace Pepsi Chart Show

GWR’s sales division, Opus, is to launch a new interactive chart show across it’s Mix network called “core control”.
The show, scheduled to run on weekday evenings, will not be a traditional chart rundown, but will invite listeners to text requests for their favourite song, whilst encouraging them to subscribe to web-based and SMS services to receive celebrity gossip. The show will also feature a constantly updated pop news service.
Peter Charlton, Opus sales director, said: “We believe this is an exciting new format, not just for Opus, but for commercial radio which will provide youth audiences every night of the week.”
The group is not the first to plan an assault on the charts, since the future of the Network Chart show, for which Capital Radio holds the £5m sales contract, remains uncertain after Pepsi withdrew its sponsorship.
The announcement follows Emap’s launch of it’s own interactive Smash Hits chart show which will be broadcast across Emap Performance’s Kiss stations and its Big City network of stations in the North, as well as on Smash Hits TV.
