GWR Sends Respec Out To Bristol
The radio group GWR is to back a bid to launch a new multicultural radio station in Bristol. GWR has taken a 30% stake in Respec FM, which is an afro-caribbean music led local station which aims to ‘meet the needs of the diverse community of Bristol.’
GWR currently owns GWR FM and Brunel Classic Gold on the Bristol radio market, but neither of them actively targets Bristol’s diverse multicultural population under their current promises of performance.
Respec FM originated in 1989 as a pirate radio station, and targets the 15 to 40 yr old age group. Its application to the Radio Authority for one of the new small scale licences within Bristol and North Somerset is one of 13 to have been received.
Chief executive of the GWR Group commented: “GWR has long-standing connections with the members of the Respec consortium which combines professional radio experience with deep community roots. I believe this to be a unique and winning application which stands to make a significant contribution to the local population.
GWR recently offered £25.6 million for the Orchard Media Group (see Newsline). Although Orchard has recommended to its shareholders that they accept the offer, the sale has yet to be finalised.
