GWR Teams With UBC To Produce Digital Radio Data Service

GWR Group and UBC Media Group have formed a joint venture company, Digizone, to launch the world’s first commercial digital radio data service on the national multiplex Digital One.

The service is currently available to anyone with a data capable digital radio receiver, namely the Psion Wavefinder, launched last year as a PC peripheral which allows users to receive digital radio and data services.

Simon Ward, chairman and new media and digital director of GWR said, “This is a sector of broadcasting we will be looking at to add value to our current audio services. For the first time we can add vision to sound, increase the detail of radio information and offer to put our listeners in direct contact with our customers. We expect to see a lot more in this space in the near future.”

At present the service contains a wireless news service from ITN, an exclusive cartoon games service from The Cartoon Network and companion data services to national radio stations Classic FM and Core.
