H Bauer Loses Real Editor

Janice Turner has stepped down as editor of H Bauer’s glossy women’s fortnightly magazine Real just over a year after its launch.

A spokesperson for the company confirmed that Turner, who resigned last week, will be replaced by health and beauty editor Sian Rees, but refused to comment on speculation that her departure will lead to a rethink of the title.

Real, which launched in April last year, enjoyed a successful entry into the market with sales of its first three issues outstripping targets by 20% (see Real Success For New Woman’s Fortnightly). However, the magazine has fallen short of initial expectations, with circulation for the six month period ending December 2001 resting at 173,988 (see NewsLine), almost 200,000 less than predicted in the launch period.

As a fortnightly, the title, which combines the standard weekly market fodder of “real life stories” with the gloss of the monthly market, rather defies definition and therefore comparison. In circulation terms, it remains some way behind the majority of the weekly market, but would find itself alongside Red and She in the middle of the monthly market.
