Hannibal Smashes UK Box Office Records

Hannibal, the long-awaited sequel to Silence of the Lambs, broke box-office records when it launched in the UK last weekend. The film grossed £6.4m in its first three days, the highest ever opening weekend for an 18-certificate movie.

The previous record for this category was held by Snatch, which grossed £3.18m when it opened in the UK last year (see July’s Cinema Admissions Fail To Beat 1999 Figure). Box-office takings for Hannibal were almost double this sum, however, and it recorded the fifth-highest opening weekend for a film in the UK.

In addition, the weekend of 16-18 February 2001 is now on record as the third-highest box office weekend ever recorded in the UK. The weekend grossed £12.8 million due to the success of Hannibal, the continued success of What Women Want, and the opening of The Emperor’s New Groove.
