Michael Heseltine, trade and industry secretary, is to meet Britain’s leading broadcasters to try to draw up a co-ordinated industrial and export strategy for the industry.
The meeting to be held on November 3 will look at programme production, distribution, and technology and research, with the emphasis to be on encouraging export. This could have policy implications for ITV and the BBC. The ITV companies arguing for changes in the ownership rules to allow takeovers see Heseltine as a likely ally.
