House Of Commons Seeks New Regulation Rules

The House of Commons Select Committee on Culture, Media and Sport today published a report which said that the BBC’s commercial and public service functions should be independently regulated whilst calling for a streamlining of content regulation. This would include the abolition of the Broadcasting Standards Commission.

Following the release of The Multi-Media Revolution report, the ITC, OFT and OFTEL have announced the setting up of machinery to handle issues which cross the “traditional boundaries between regulators in the field of communications”.

A joint statement from the watchdogs says: “In the rapidly developing communications market, we need arrangements which will help give clarity to industry; keep down the regulatory burden; and ensure that important issues do not fall through gaps.”

To this end a new group of senior officials, to be called the Standing Committee on Competition in Communication, will meet regularly to discuss current issues.
