HTV Chairman Attacks ITV Licence Payments
Louis Sherwood, HTV’s group Chairman, has spoken out at the company’s AGM against the high licence payments of some ITV companies. He also called upon the ITC and the Government to announce soon what formula the they will use for calculating new licence payments.
Mr Sherwood said: “In this fiercely competitive, multi-channel environment there is no longer any justification for high bidding ITV companies to continue making such large payments. By the end of 1998 HTV will have made bid payments of over £100 million whereas Central and Scottish Television will have paid less than £15,000 each over the same period. And BSkyB with potentially hundreds of national channels will have made no similar payments. These discrepancies need to be eliminated.”
Additionally, it was also confirmed that HTV is looking forward to the renegotiation of the ITV news supply contract and expects ‘market forces to enable a quality service to be supplied at a substantially reduced price.’ Chief Executive Chris Rowlands will be principally involved in negotiating a new news supply contract.
