Ikon, the new men’s monthly magazine launches tomorrow. With a first issue cover price of 99p this glossy magazine aims to take a share of the rapidly expanding men’s sector.
The cover of Ikon features the singer of REM Michael Stipe and the words Music Movies, Sport. The headings are in eye-catching fluorescent orange.
Chris Roberts, editor, kicks off the magazine with a statement that the team involved with the creation of Ikon are ” making it up as we go along.” He says that ” We’re bored by pages of pictures of shirts and shoes and by ersatz sex” Ikon covers a wide variety of areas which other men’s magazines do not.
Ikon covers areas such as: film, music, interviews, and celebrity news. The interviews are long and in-depth and cover celebrities such as Michael Stipe, Alan Shearer, Eddy Irvine – the Formula 1 driver, Tom Watkins and Shaun Ryder.
Ikon sports news covers football to golf, snowboarding to running, in short items. Many of the items are covered in a short and to-the-point style contrasting with interviews or articles which may cover up to ten pages. The feature subjects in this, the first issue, range from band interviews to organised crime.
Advertisers within the magazine include Virgin Megastore, Sony, and Miller Draft Beer. The ad:ed ratio is 11:88.
Ikon has an unusual eclectic feel, in that it covers diverse subjects unlike other mens magazines. The writers seem to have covered their favourite subjects which include both contemporary and non contemporary culture.
